Statistics in Canada show that there are approximately 5,000 ground Search and Rescue incidents every year on average. They involve all types of outdoor activities, from hiking and skiing to backcountry expeditions and boating.

At Stark Bushcraft we encourage you to have fun and play, but always be prepared before you set out. Time spent gaining this extra knowledge and skills can help prevent your need for a Search And Rescue (SAR) team.

This full day course will teach you the basics of staying found using a map and compass as well as trip planning and essentials to bring on your adventures to enjoy the wilderness and get home safe.

In today's world of GPS systems and smart phone internet technology many people don't learn these vital survival skills anymore and then find themselves lost and unprepared in the wilderness when the technology stops working for any number of reasons.

Main Teaching Points:

  • How to read a map
  • How to align the map with the terrain without a compass
  • How to align the map to the magnetic north pole using a compass
  • How to set the magnetic declination on your compass to the map you are using
  • Taking a bearing and setting a course
  • Finding your positition on the map using bearings
  • Trip Planning
  • Rescue planning and how to get found should you get into trouble
  • Packing the essentials for a weekend day trip or single overnight hiking trip

This course will involve some walking in an outdoor location in or near Calgary so wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather.

You can purchase a compass through us or you can provide your own.  If you do provide your own it must have a base, and a declination scale.

Bring a light lunch that doesn't require cooking.
